미군 손 잡는 한국인 소녀…한국전쟁 흑백사진, 컬러로 부활

Korean Girl Holds the hand of U.S. Army soldier...Black-and-white pictures of the Korean War in color

1950년에 발발한 한국전쟁 당시를 생생하게 엿볼 수 있는 흑백 사진이 디지털 복원 작업을 통해 컬러로 재탄생했다. 가장 눈에 띄는 사진은 한 미군이 3~5세로 보이는 한 여자아이의 손을 잡아주는 모습을 담은 것으로, 사진 속 아이는 먼지와 흙이 잔뜩 묻은 붉은색 저고리와 한복 치마를 입고 있다. 어리둥절한 표정으로 자신에게 손을 내민 미군의 손을 잡는 장면이 인상적이다. 또 다른 사진에서는 부상을 입은 군인들을 등에 업고 바삐 움직이는 미군들의 모습도 볼 수 있다.

Black-and-white photos showing a vivid glimpse of the Korean War that broke out in 1950 was recreated in color through digital restoration. The most noticeable picture shows a U.S. soldier holding the hand of a girl who appears to be three to five years old, with the child in the picture wearing a red jeogori and a hanbok skirt covered with dust and dirt. The scene of the U.S. Army soldier holding hands with a puzzled look is impressive. Another photo shows U.S. soldiers busily moving with wounded soldiers on their backs.

우주과학에 관심이 있는 사람들에게는 익숙한 얼굴도 있다. 미국인 최초로 지구 궤도를 비행한 우주인이자 한국전쟁 참전용사인 존 글렌(1921~2016)이 그 주인공이다. 사진 속 존 글렌은 구멍이 난 비행기 앞에서 활짝 웃고 있다. 이는 존 글렌이 한국전쟁에 참전했을 당시, 적의 대공포 공격으로 비행기 기체에 250개에 달하는 구멍이 났지만 기적적으로 살아 돌아온 것을 기념하는 사진으로 추정된다.

Some people who are interested in space science find a familiar face. John Glenn (1921-2016), the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth and a Korean War veteran, is the main character. In the picture, John Glenn is smiling broadly in front of a perforated plane. It is believed to mark John Glenn's miraculous return to life after an enemy anti-aircraft attack that left as many as 250 holes in the plane's fuselage.

이밖에도 눈이 수북하게 쌓인 어느 산골 마을에 미군들이 역시 눈 쌓인 철모와 군복을 입고 줄지어 서 있는 모습의 사진도 포함돼 있다. 컬러로 복원되면서 당시 상황을 보다 생생하게 엿볼 수 있다. 이번 복원 작업을 진행한 영국인 전문가 로이스톤 레오나드(55)는 “흑백사진에 컬러를 넣으면서 전쟁의 공포와 그 안에서의 삶 등 지금과는 다른 세상을 살아볼 수 있었다”면서 “우리는 모든 어린이들에게 절대 이러한 일이 다시 일어나서는 안된다는 사실을 알려줘야 한다”고 강조했다.

Other photos show U.S. soldiers lined up in snow-covered iron hats and military uniforms in a mountain village. As the color is restored, the situation at that time can be seen more vividly. "By putting color on the black and white picture, we have been able to live in a world that is different from what it is now, including the fear of war and life inside," said Roystone Leonard, a 55-year-old British expert who worked on the restoration. "We have to let all children know that this should never happen again.”
