Foreign media say North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's apology for the killing of North Korean troops against the South Korean people is intended to soothe the anger of the South Korean people and prevent tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Major foreign media outlets quickly reported the ‘apology’ from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for murdering a South Korean official. The AFP reported it as urgent news, describing the incident as something unsavory. Moon Jae-in said Kim Jung-un apologized for disappointing the South Korean president and South Korean nationals. North Korea's apology is aimed at calming down the anger of South Koreans at a time when inter-Korean relations are deadlocked

Associated Press stated the North Korean leader’s apology is extremely unusual and is likely to reduce negative feelings towards North Korea and President Moon in South Korea, easing the tension between the two countries. Reuters says North Korea's message comes as President Moon faces severe political fallout from the incident. President Moon proposed an initiative including North Korea at the U.N. General Assembly and demanded an end-of-war declaration, and as the incident became known, in South Korea he was attacked by conservatives, including other opposition parties.
한편 워싱턴포스트는 한국 정부가 코로나19 사태에 관한 공감을 표하는 북한의 친서를 공개한 것은 남북 어느 쪽도 이 사건으로 남북 관계 파탄의 위험을 무릅쓰고 싶지 않아 한다는 것을 시사한다고 강조했습니다. 뉴욕타임스도 북한의 사과는 남북 관계가 심각한 위기에 직면할 수 있었던 일을 막은 것으로 보인다고 보도했습니다. 또 한국의 일부 당국자들은 김 위원장의 사과가 교착 상태에 빠진 남북 대화가 재개되는 전환점이 될 수 있기를 희망한다고 전했습니다. YTN 이동우입니다.
The Washington Post said, “Coupled with Pyongyang’s apology for the shooting, Seoul’s release of the North Korean letter expressing sympathies over the coronavirus suggested that neither side was willing to risk an extended rupture in relations as a result of the official’s killing.” The New York Times also reported that North Korea's apology apparently prevented inter-Korean relations from facing a serious crisis.
