왕원빈 중국 외교부 대변인은 이날 정례 기자회견에서 “미국이 24일 오후 4시까지 휴스턴 주재 중국 총영사관의 모든 활동을 중단하고 모든 인원이 떠나라고 요구했다는 데 사실이냐”는 중국 매체의 질문을 받고 “21일 미국이 갑작스레 휴스턴 중국 총영사관에 대해 모든 활동을 중단하라고 요구했다”며 “이는 미국의 일방적인 정치적 도발”이라고 했다.

왕 대변인은 미국의 조치에 대해 “국제관계와 중·미 사이의 양자 영사(領事) 협정 등 국제법을 심각하게 위반하는 조치”라며 “미국이 즉시 잘못된 결정을 취소하지 않을 경우 중국은 합법적이고 필요한 대응을 하겠다”고 밝혔다. 왕 대변인은 “미국이 중국에 대해 혐오 감정을 자극하면서 미국 주재 중국 대사관은 폭탄·살해 협박을 받고 있다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “그러는 동안 중국 주재 미국 대사관 인원들은 (중국에 대한) 침투, 관여 활동을 하고 홈페이지를 통해 중국을 비난하고 있다”고 했다.
"This is a serious violation of international law, such as international relations and bilateral consular agreements between China and the U.S.," Wang said. "If the U.S. does not immediately cancel the wrong decision, China will take legal and necessary action. As the U.S. stimulates hateful feelings toward China, the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. is being threatened with bombing and death threats," spokesman Wang said. "In the meantime, U.S. embassy officials in China are infiltrating and engaging in activities and criticizing China through its website," he said.
한편 미국 폭스뉴스에 따르면 21일 오후 8시 휴스턴 주재 중국 총영사관에서 화재가 발생해 소방대가 출방했지만 외교 원칙에 따라 총영사관 안으로 들어가지 못했다고 보도했다. 폭스뉴스는 미국 정부의 철수 요구에 따라 중국 총영사관이 기밀 문서을 소각하다 불이 난 것으로 보인다고 했다.
Meanwhile, according to Fox News, a fire broke out at the Chinese Consulate General in Houston at 8 p.m. on July 21st, but failed to enter the consulate in accordance with diplomatic principles. Fox News reported that the Chinese consulate general seems to have caught fire while incinerating classified documents in response to the U.S. government's request to withdraw.
